Health is not only about maintaining your skin, hair and body. It also requires a healthy mind. Stress is a condition that eats away our healthy mind. It keeps us depressed. busy and lost. Battling stress is an essential feature of today’s life. But, not too many of us understand the importance of stress busting. We push ourselves to the limit and think we can live every day under extreme levels of stress. Guys, one day you will explode because of this. Life is hectic and it will be for the next thirty years so accept that and make sure you curb your stress levels on a regular basis. Yoga is the best option to curb stress and calm the mind. Too many people take it as a joke but this practice has helped millions of people across the globe. Yoga helps in countless ways, by increasing your focus, reducing anxiety and lowers the risk of cardiac arrest. There is a reason why this practice has been adopted by various countries from India and is practised on a massive scale abroad. How many of you have seen Avengers? The very reason Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) asked Bruce Banner aka Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) whether yoga helped him keep his nerves is because that is the effect it has on the mind. It is also the shizz in Hollywood. Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Adam Levine and Robert Downey Jr are major yoga maniacs. So what are the benefits of Yoga?
The most obvious benefit is flexibility. However, you might not be able to touch your toes on the very first day! But with constant practice you will notice a gradual loosening. All the “impossible” positions will become possible. You will also notice that all the back aches and pains start reducing and disappear altogether with time. Tight hips are prone to straining the knee joint due to improper alignment of the thigh and shins. Inflexible muscles and connective tissues, like the fascia and ligaments can cause bad posture.
muscles do much more than look good. They prevent conditions like arthritis and back pain. Elderly people tend to fall a lot more due to lack of strength in muscles. But with yoga, the muscles grow strong and flexible thereby helping them keep a steady balance.
Every time you practice yoga, you take your joints through a wide range of movements. This helps prevent degenerative arthritis or mitigate disability by “squeezing or soaking” the areas of cartilage that are not used. Joint cartilages are like sponge, they absorbs fresh nutrients only when its fluid is squeezed out and fresh supply is soaked in. Without proper exercise neglected cartilages wear out thereby exposing the underlying bone.
The spinal disks are extremely important. They act like shock absorbers between the vertebrae that can herniate and compress nerves and crave movement. That is the only way they get nutrients. Therefore sessions, combined with plenty of back bends, forward bends and twists helps the spine and keeps the discs supple.
If you regularly get your heart into the aerobic range, you reduce the chances of heart attacks and relieve depression. Although yoga is not aerobic, if you continue to do it vigorously you can boost your heart rate into the aerobic range. Studies have found that yoga lowers your resting heart rate, increases endurance, improve the levels of oxygen uptake. And more oxygen is beneficial for the body.
If high blood pressure or hypertension is what plagues you then you will greatly benefit from yoga. According to a study, Savasana (corpse pose) practice reduced the blood pressure of a patient greatly. It reduced the systolic blood pressure by 26 points and reduced the diastolic pressure by a 15 point. It has been proved that higher the blood pressure more is the drop.
Yoga has been proved to improve mind sets. The lotus position or the King dancer pose helps by preventing mood swings. Yoga reduces depression. It has been proved to increase the serotonin level and decrease monoamine oxidase level and cortisol. At the University of Wisconsin, researchers have found that the left pre-frontal cortex showed increased activity in people who meditate regularly, which essentially means enhanced happiness and immune function.
Yoga has been proved beneficial for every part of the body. In this world we are plagued by arthritis, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and various heart diseases; these have become a part of our daily lives along with hypertension and anxiety. Yoga is one solution to cure us off these issues and at the same time it helps us remain fit and flexible. But the reason yoga would be a degree better than the other fitness routines is because it helps clear the mind and reduce depression. We live in a world plagued by depression. It is sad that children suffer from depression at such a young age. Curbing depression and enhancing mental fitness is what sets this routine apart from the rest. We all need the peace. So folks, it is time for some mild mind cleansing. Get your yoga mats ready!
