Ask any true wrestling fan who the best wrestler of all time is, and most of them would have the same answer- Shawn Michaels. The Heartbreak Kid, The Showstopper, The Icon, The Main Event, Mr. WrestleMania; Shawn Michaels has earned all these names by his efforts and dedication. He has won a record 11 ‘PWI Match of the year’ recognition. No wrestler has given more 5 star matches than Shawn Michaels. WWE in its DVD ’50 Greatest WWE Superstars’ placed Shawn Michaels at the number 1 position. Edge, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, all these established names grew up idolizing Shawn Michaels. Once HBK got in the ring, it was bound to be a great match. Here is a list of some life lessons that we can learn from the Heart Break kid-
Master every single aspect of your art
Closely watch a Shawn Michaels match and you’d realize that this guy could wrestle in any way. Weather it was technical wrestling, power wrestling, mat wrestling, speed wrestling, or high flying, Shawn could do it all. Watch the Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart Iron Man Match and you’d see the wrestling dexterity that Shawn Michaels had.
Give it all you’ve got
Weather it was WrestleMania or a single match on Raw, Shawn Michaels always gave his best performance. He once delivered a classic match with John Cena on Raw, which turned out to be the PWI Match of the year. At the 25th anniversary of WrestleMania, Shawn Michaels delivered one of the best wrestling matches of all time. When Shawn Michaels entered the ring, it would always be a wrestling match to watch out for.
Place your faith in God
After becoming the WWE Champion, Shawn faced a lot drugs and alcohol problems. He then suffered a career threatening and took a 2 year break from wrestling. During this period, he became a born-again Christian. He placed all his faith in god and then returned after 2 years. Ever since, he’s been giving epic performances in the ring. Clearly, a great life lesson!
You’ll always be successful if you help other people be successful
Ever since his return in 2002, Michaels has selflessly helped other wrestlers to come out as the winner. Many of the epic matches that Michaels entered in, he lost. Remember the epic WrestleMania match with Kurt Angle. People were stunned by the performance Shawn and Kurt gave, and guess what? Michaels lost. Again in that epic Hell in a Cell match with HHH, Michaels sacrificed his whole body to make HHH look good in the match. And the WrestleMania match with John Cena! He gave John Cena the match of his life. HBK is the best seller wrestling has ever witnessed.
You don’t always have to win to win hearts
It was quite common for Shawn Michaels to get a standing ovation after a match he’d lose. After the Hell in a Cell match with Triple H, the crowd gave him a standing ovation and he walked with his entrance song. Only a few wrestlers can make this happen. The WrestleMania 25 match with Undertaker, many people called it the best wrestling match they have ever seen. Shawn Michaels lost the match, but that night he became the greatest wrestler ever to step in the ring. It didn’t matter whether he’d win or lose, he would always give a match that was an instant classic.
Size does not matter!
What would be an ideal physique for a face wrestler, I guess at least 6’2 220 pounds. Well, even though Shawn was billed at 6’1, I don’t think he’s taller than 5’11 at most. HHH even poked fun at HBK’s Hall of fame induction by calling him ‘5’10 185 Pounds’. When he came, most people thought that he was too small and he can’t make it to the big level. Shawn proved each one of them wrong. His size didn’t matter. He could pull off a great match with a wrestler of any size. Remember his match with The Great Khali? Not only he succeeded in taking the big spot, but also became one of the greatest wrestling icons of all time. So breaking stereotypes, Shawn Michaels proved that size should never be an issue to make it big!
This is what Kurt Angle once said about Shawn Michaels- “Shawn’s the absolute greatest of all time. He makes everybody look a hundred times better than they are. I mean that about myself, too. Every time I saw him wrestle I got more and more amazed. The older he got, the better he got. In my matches with Shawn we both stepped it up. In WWE you might spend a whole week going over your match for WrestleMania. Shawn and I didn’t do that. We talked, got to know each other, talked about families. We didn’t need that week to get ready. All we had to do was get in that ring. A lot of people might consider me the best ever. I say ‘No way, Shawn Michaels is.’”
