We never forget to take care of our skin and hair,but what about our eyes,the gateway to the outside world.Nobody wants wearing huge spectacles all day or having red and dull eyes.Working all day in front of a computer screen can strain your eyes, make them dry and cause severe headache .Here are few tips to take care of your eyes-
Heading out?Do not forget to wear UV protective sunglasses no matter how old are you.They not just make you look cool but also protect your eyes.Make sure your sunglasses have polarized lenses and not just a darker shade of lens.The ultraviolet rays makes your eyesight weak and is also linked to eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae and pterygia.Wear a hat or carry an umbrella while you are outside for added protection.
2.DO NOT LOOK AT BRIGHT LIGHT
Avoid looking at the sun directly and even extremely bright lights such as the welding lights which can damage the iris of the eyes.Watch your favourite serial/movie at least at a distance of 10 -12′ away from the television.
3.TRY NOT TO SPEND EXCESSIVE TIME LOOKING AT YOUR COMPUTER SCREENCONTINUOUSLY-
The glare from computer screens can cause fatigue in the eyes making them dry.Make it a point to not look in the screen continuously and give your eyes regular breaks if you are not doing something important.Blink every 30 seconds when you’re sitting down and looking at your computer screen to combat dry eyes.This is something which you must bring into practise in your daily lives.Also,rub your palms against each other till them become warm. Cover your eyes with your warm palms for about a minute. Palming is another great way to relax and soothe your eyes at workplace and home.
Get your eyes checked and wear spectacles .If you avoid wearing them while reading and for other daily purposes,your eyesight will get effected.Buy frames that suit your face and are comfortable to wear with the appropriate eye strength.
5.WEAR CONTACT LENSES WITH CARE-
Read the instructions properly and do not wear contact lenses for more than 19 hours.Acquire these from an eye doctor and wear them always with clean hands.Do not rub your eyes if you have worn contact lenses.
Do not wear them while sleeping as the block the oxygen supply to your eyes.
If you are swimming,wear eye goggles .Avoid wearing lenses since they might slip off.
Do not look into bright light wearing these and avoid going near hot places.Like in the kitchen,near a fireplace etc.
6.DO NOT READ IN DIM LIGHT-
Reading in dim light can cause eye strain but will not damage your eyes. If your eyes feel tired, stop for a while and take a break.
7.USE EYE DROPS-
To get rid of dry eyes and soothe itchiness,use medicated or Ayurvedic eye drops.You can also use rosewater to soothe your eyes and they also have no side effects.Keep the eye drops’ container in the refrigerator for them to be more effective.
8.SOOTHE YOUR EYELIDS-
Cucumbers contain asorbic acid and caffeic acid, which prevent water retention. These compounds help explain why cucumbers are used throughout the world to treat inflammation and dermatitis.Press cucumber slices on your eyelids before going to sleep.You can also use cold green tea bags for soothing them and also to reduce the under eye bags.
Drink loads of water to keep your eyes healthy and shining always.They help in maintaining regular blood flow to the eyes and prevents any irritation and dryness.Also splashing cold water can refresh and cool down your eyes.
Eat loads of fruits and vegetables for maintaining a good eyesight.
Carrots are known to improve eyesight and are loaded with betacarotenes.Eat them raw,drink carrot juice,make a salad,sandwich or cook them.Include carrots in your daily diet.
If you don’t like carrots,there are other healthy options including sweet potatoes,mangoes,dried apricots,melons,lettuce,squash,bell peppers and green leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach.
Wild salmon ,tuna and sardines are also healthy options for your eyes. That’s because they contain omega-3 fats, which are the good fats for your body. These omega-3s protect tiny blood vessels in the eyes.
11.EXERCISES FOR EYES-
Focusing on near and far objects:
Hold your thumb in front of you, about 15cm away. Try to focus on your thumb. After 1 to 2 minutes, focus on any object which is more than 3m away from your thumb but in the same direction. Now refocus on your thumb again. Once you have done this a couple of times, try doing it with each breath you take, for between 5 and 10 minutes.You can also try this exercise using a pencil.
This is a very effective method to reset the vision when your eye has become tired and vision has become blurred.
Rub both your palms together for 3 to 4 minutes, till you feel the warmth. Once warm, place them on your eyes in a cup shaped position, such that your fingers are resting on the forehead. Keep your eyes steady and make sure that no light passes in between the fingers. See the darkness inside your cup shaped hands and feel the warmth of your palms. Repeat several times.
Rotation of the eyeballs:
Close your eyes and rotate your eyeballs in a clockwise and then an anti-clockwise direction. Repeat this 10 to 15 times.This exercise loosens the muscles of the eyes and stimulates blood flow ,thus improving the vision of your eyes.
