How to have more Self Esteem?

Self esteem
Self esteem

Self Esteem is nothing but the love and respect that we have for ourselves. We need to feel good about ourselves all time.  There are many self esteem destroyers in the world. They may be the people we hang out with, the news we hear, or some bad past experiences. Sometimes, Self esteem is what distinguishes the low and shady person from the energetic and positive ones. Also, a all-time high and energetic person may suffer from a low self-esteem. Having a low self esteem is not a pleasant feeling. It feels like everyone is against you and no one can ever love you. But, a lot of people, at some point in their lives, go through this feeling. It’s natural, just like a cold or flu. And it can be tackled and you can easily overcome it by taking care of a few things-

Decide to feel good about yourself

Even if it seems difficult, it is important to first decide that ‘I can be content with myself’. This one thought will do wonders for your self esteem. Decide that ‘Only I am responsible for the way I feel’.

Know who you are and Know your priorities in life

People who are confident and have high self esteem have one thing in common- ‘They are comfortable in their own skin’. Your personality should have a relaxed and comfortable vibe. For this you should be clear regarding your beliefs, values, and priorities. You should have a vision in your life and work for that vision. You should know your priorities in life. Once you attain this clarity, raising self esteem will become a lot easier.

Adopt a great lifestyle

One thing that you will notice in most peak performers- they all have a great lifestyle. They consistently get up early. They take care of their fitness. They meditate regularly. They consume a great diet. They sleep and wake up on time. They have a great social circle and spend time with their loved ones. Adopting a few great habits would increase your self esteem like nothing else would do. Here are few habits that worked for me, when I suffered from a low self esteem-

  • Sleeping on a fixed time everyday.
  • Consistently waking up at 5 AM everyday.
  • A 20 minutes pranayama everyday, first thing in the morning (Anulom Vilom, Kapal bhati, and Brahmri)
  • Recording my goals, plans and blessings in a Journal everyday.
  • Practicing and learning the thing I love everyday.
  • Eating a great breakfast.
  • Socializing with my friends regularly.
  • Taking out at least half an hour to read a good book.
  • Drinking at least 10 glasses of water everyday.
  • Spending some time with my family members everyday.
  • Going on a 1 mile run for at least 4 days a week.
  • A short meditation or visualization before sleeping.
  • Most important- Leaving some bad habits such as smoking, too much drinking.

Stop or reduce connections with negative people ( or stay around more positive people)

Sometimes the negative people may be our close friends or family members. If it’s not possible to stop the communication, it’ll be better if you start connecting with more positive people. Emotions are contagious, so when you are spending time with a person who is constantly complaining and negative, all these emotions are transferred to you. I am not suggesting that you turn your backs against your friends who are facing a tough time. I am just talking about the always negative and discouraging souls. They are the best destroyers of self esteem.

Take action!

Don’t just sit there and cry about having a low self esteem. Stand up, go out, and do the things that you’re supposed to do. Adopt a great lifestyle. Learn from great books. Socialize with your friends. Watch great movies. You need to have momentum. Remember that ‘motion creates emotion’. So have a positive body language. Walk, talk, and dress up like a rock star. Remember this quote, ” Make your dreams so big that there is no time for tiny worries’.

Be patient!

It may take some time for you to feel your absolute best. But, be patient with yourself. Don’t give up in between. Keep the momentum going. It may take some time but the results do show up! Waking up at 5 AM everyday and practicing pranayama is what worked for me the best. You can develop your own great habits but do follow them consistently!

“Tell me how a person judges his or her self-esteem, and I will tell you how that person operates at work, in love, in parenting, in every important aspect of existence – and how high he or she is likely to rise. The reputation you have with yourself – your self-esteem – is the single most important factor for a fulfilling life.”- Nathaniel Branden
