Shawshank Redemption is an all time classic movie. Based on a short story written by Stephen King, the movie has inspired millions of people across the world. It teaches us to maintain our stability and self esteem during torturing and hopeless times in life. The movie revolves around Andy Dufresne and Ellis ‘Red’ Redding. Andy is falsely convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Red has spent most of his life in the Shawshank jail and he is known as ‘the guy who can get things’. For 19 years, in the face of adversity, Andy keeps his hopes alive and finally gets out of the jail. Here are a few life lessons from the Shawshank Redemption-
1. Hope is a good thing
Red spent most of his life in the Shawshank prison. He was now accustomed stay inside the jail and did not wanted to go out. But, Andy was hopeful to get out of the jail and live his life with full freedom. Red once said to Andy that hope is a dangerous and it makes a man go insane. But, Andy responds by saying that hope is a good thing, perhaps the best of things. Digging the jail tunnel using a small hammer may seem like an impossible task to many people. But, Andy never lost hope. What seemed like an impossible, Andy did it in 19 years. That, my friend, is the power of hope.
2. Get busy living or Get busy dying
It is easy for us to get stuck in the shackles of life that we forget to live. The inmates of the prison were accustomed to live a life full of restrictions. But, Andy never accepted his life this way. While in person, he always stayed busy in finding ways to get out of the prison. He knew that life was meant to be lived with freedom. Unlike most of his inmates, Andy kept his hope intact and made efforts to make his life better.
3. Crawl through the river of shit
Sometimes in life to get out of shit, you have to crawl through it. When Andy finished digging the tunnel, he had to crawl through the dirt and shit to find his way out to gain freedom. You can’t escape the difficulties in life, because these difficulties lead you towards the path of success. Andy struggled in the jail for about 19 years before finding salvation.
4. Patience and Perseverance are important
Andy never lost his patience and always kept the stability of his mind intact. Even when he was sent to a solitary cell, Andy didn’t lose his temper. He was exploited, beaten up, raped, and was tortured with all forms of human miseries. But, did he quit and adapt to his environment? No, he struggled. When everyone was fooling around, he was digging the tunnel using a small hammer. He kept his patience intact. Andy did the impossible task of convince the authority of renovating the jail library. He showed that patience and perseverance finally lead to a path of salvation.
5. During difficult times, keep your mind busy
During tough times in the prison, Andy always kept his mind busy. He indulged in renovating the jail library. He spent his days helping the jail authority filing their tax returns. In the night, he used to dig the tunnel using the small hammer. In a way, Andy kept his mind in control by keeping it busy. He even taught one of his illiterate inmates to read. The mind is a wandering creature and it may go out of control when it has nothing to do. So, it is best to keep the mind busy by indulging in productive activities.
6. Never exploit others
The jail warden in the Shawshank prison indulged in corruption and murder for his benefit. He laundered the money by exploiting Andy’s financial acumen. When the time came to pay Andy back, he refused and sent him to the solitary prison for a week. When, through a jail inmate, Andy came to know about the real murderer of his wife, he murdered the jail inmate to subdue the evidence. In the end, when Andy came out, it turned out against him as Andy spilled his secrets by providing the details and the ledger. To avoid the arrest, the warden killed himself. So, exploiting others for your own benefit doesn’t pay well.
I’ll end the article with an awesome quote by Red- “I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don’t wanna know. I would like to think they were singing about some thing was so beautiful it cant be expressed in words and make your heart ache because of it.I tell you this voice soared higher and farther than anybody in a Gray place dares to dream it is like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away. For the briefest moment every last man in Shawshank felt free.
