Summers may well be the laziest time of the year. The long days leave us drained of energy till the end and the scorching heat forces us to stay indoors in the company of air conditioners and coolers with nothing to do. Soon the television and laptops leave us irritated and all we are left to do is beat the heat by lying meaninglessly on bed all day. But while the air conditioner can keep only the body surface at peace, the insides need some coolant to counter the heat. This coolant is responsible for keeping our spirits up throughout the summers and not let the heat get on our nerves. And considering the temperature that has been prevailing in current times, it is a pretty big responsibility. So whom can we trust with it?

Soft drinks? Health drinks? Juices? Shakes? No. The answer is refreshment drink and to specify the exact, lemonade. There’s no question that after being out in heat for a while when you get back to the safety of home, more than any soft drink or shake you prefer a glass of chilled lemonade. It is the easiest available drink with simple ingredients required for preparation, easy to make and compared to the other drinks, the cheapest one too. But these three aspects are not even considered as far as beating the advantages of lemonade over other drinks are concerned. Lemonade has various impacts on the health of a person as well that apart from the easiest and cheapest, make it the wisest choice as well.

Lemon is an excellent and rich source of Vitamin C, a nutrient that protects body against immune system deficiencies. Skin also uses lemon juice to retain a healthy glow. Drinking lemon juice improves the collagen levels and repairs tissue damage of the skin. It also acts as an anti-oxidant helping prevent wrinkles, sunburn and fights free radicals which can cause blemishes and acne. And apart from Vitamin C, the small sized lemon is also a source for various other nutrients like citric acid, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. The potassium content in it helps nourish brain and nerve cells. Vitamin C and potassium also help control blood pressure as both of them are found lacking in high blood pressure patients and hence replenish the amount in the patients.

Lemons contain pectin fiber which is beneficial for colon health, serves as a powerful antibacterial and also helps one lose weight by assisting him in fighting hunger cravings. It also helps in reducing pain and inflammation in joints and knees as it dissolves uric acid, one of the main causes of inflammation. The citric acid in lemon can erode tooth enamel, helping relieve toothaches and gingivitis and it also acts as a mouth freshener. It also helps maintain the health of eyes and fights against eye problems. Drinking lemonade has beneficial effects on the digestive system of a person also. Not only does it aid in production of digestive juices by loosening toxins in digestive tracts, it also helps to relieve the symptoms of indigestion such as heartburn, burping and bloating in the person. It strengthens the liver by providing energy to liver enzymes when they are too dilute.

Lemon is found to be anti-carcinogenic, which lowers the rate of colon, prostate and breast cancer by preventing faulty metabolism in the cell; it has twenty two anti-cancer elements. It is an anti-oxidant which deactivates the free radicals preventing many dangerous diseases like stroke and cardiovascular diseases. The citric acid in lemon juice helps to dissolve gallstones, calcium deposits and kidney stones as well. Disease states only occur when the pH of the body is acidic. And although lemons contain citric acid, inside the bodies they are alkaline. Drinking lemon water helps remove overall acidity in the body and maintain its pH. The energy one receives from food comes from the reaction that occurs when positively charged ions from food enter the digestive tract and interact with the negatively charged enzymes there. Lemon is among those rare foods that contain more negatively charged ions and thus provides body with more energy when it enters the digestive tract.

Hence frequent use of lemonade isn’t going to make a dent in the pocket but is going to affect your health in a positive way apart from shrugging of the lazy self of you and provide you with energy to handle the summers. So it’s only the wise choice to let go of the useless drinks in the summers and instead turn to something that actually helps, actually aids in keeping cool. It is time to realize that lemon aids during the summers.
