La Prairie $1200 Serum Review

Kristen Noel Crawley, La Prairie

In December, I experienced a magical trip to Aspen to experience La Prairie’s new Platinum Rare Cellular Night Elixir. Yes, it’s as fancy as it sounds. This $1200 serum (no that wasn’t a typo, it’s actually twelve hundred dollars) promises “newborn” skin by morning after using only ONE drop. It sounds too good to be true. What could possibly make you have baby skin by breakfast?

The Breakdown

If you haven’t heard of La Prairie, they’re an OG Swiss beauty brand and one of the leaders in luxury skincare. The creator, Professor Paul Niehans, started a skincare clinic in the early 1930s that catered to elite clients like Christian Dior, Pablo Picasso, Marilyn Monroe, and many others. Niehans was actually one of the first to experiment with cellular therapy. As a result, La Prairie skincare line was created to complement his clients’ at-home experience. All of La Prairie’s products are heavily rooted in science research. So, you’re really getting what you pay for (and that’s a lot!)

Dubbed ‘the elixir of life,’ La Prairie claims that this new serum will encourage skin detoxification, boost skin immunity by helping fight off free radicals and pollutants that can harm the skin, and overall help skin look and feel more energetic and lively. The elixir also claims to promote cell turnover—our skin naturally turns over, the formula just speeds up the process.

I’ve used mineral-based products before and they seem to perform well on my skin. The ingredients in this product are pretty fancy—and hardcore: gold, pearls, caviar and platinum. I learned from La Prairie that platinum peptides are an anti-aging agent, and pearl acts as an antioxidant that reduces inflammation and renews and rebuilds your skin all while providing a protective barrier. Meanwhile, caviar is packed with vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids that firm the skin. Gold has been shown to brighten complexion over time.

The Trial

I noticed a visible difference in my skin after a few nights. It was smoother and more even. I have issues with dark spot and melasma so, for me, this was a game changer. I also love the scent. I imagine its what heaven smells like—roses. The cashmere-soft texture was divine on my skin, it melted in immediately and didn’t leave a greasy or oily residue. When I put it on, my skin slurped it up instantly. I’ll admit I used more than one drop (like, three, but I like to go a little heavier on product application in general).

After a week, my skin was clearer and more smooth.

After a week, my skin was clearer and more smooth. After two weeks, I noticed that my skin had become more even and my little wrinkles, around my mouth especially, seemed to disappear. At three weeks, my skin was completely clear and very supple and plump-looking.

Here’s what my skin looked like after two weeks of consistent use (this is a completely unedited photo):

When using this product I did my regular routine: Double cleansing, toner, serum (I used three drops each time) and a moisturizer. In order to properly test the product I used all my regulars and only swapped out the serum.

The Bottom Line

If you regularly splurge on beauty products then I’d consider investing in this product. I have no doubt it will fast become a holy grail item in the beauty industry.
