“It’s not just global warming, it’s not just a loss of biodiversity, it’s not just the pollution of our oceans and the clearing of our rain forests and all these complicated systems, The [11th Hour] movie talks about the world economy, it talks about politics, it talks about personal transformation and environmental consciousness that we need to have in this generation to implement a lot of these changes that need to occur.”
– Leonardo Di Caprio
Environment is something that encircles us. It surrounds us no matter where we are. The word environment is derived from the French word “environ” which means to encircle or surround. We should be grateful that we are living in such an amazing world that is so breathtakingly beautiful.
However beautiful the environment is, it cannot stay beautiful if it is not taken care of. It is the responsibility of the people to see that they at least do their part in taking care of the environment and maintaining the beauty of Mother Nature.
The earth is a huge place and also a fantastic one. It is one of the rare gifts that we humans are so very lucky to have and yet choose to ignore that fact. It is our earth, so just as we take care of the rest of our belongings we must also take care of the most priceless one that we possess.
We are entirely dependent on the resources that we get from the earth and we couldn’t even imagine spending a day without using these resources. So why is it that we choose not to care for what we are dependent on?
People travel far and wide, and go various places for scenic beauty. Why do they do so? It’s because they feel happy and calm just by looking at the beauty that nature portrays. They feel good because of the clean and healthy environment around them. Now, just imagine what would happen if the entire earth was completely clean and hygienic, how the people would feel with such an amazing environment to live in.
It is said that the earth has not been passed down from our ancestors but is has been borrowed from our children. The statement makes complete sense. What we do to today on the earth will be ultimately have a good or bad outcome for our children or the future generation. We are using up resources at a very rapid rate and that is not going to prove good for the future. This is where the concept of sustainable development comes in. Now what is sustainable development, it is something that meets the needs of the present generation without jeopardizing the needs of the future generation. It tells us to use the resources but only to an extent that it is required for and not in excess of it. The main way to minimize the use of resources is by controlling the population.
Population is the main reason for any changes that will take place to the environment and its resources. The greater the population the more threat the environment has for depleting its resources.
There will always be situations in which we will find ourselves that are very difficult to come out from. This is one such situation. People tend to think in such a way that what difference can one man make. It’s actually quite the contrary a lot of difference can be made by a single person. You just need to take a step forward and do your bit for the environment; the rest will just follow up.
There are heavy penalties in Ireland about littering the environment. They have stated all the laws in the Litter Pollution Act, 1997. It says “Leaving or throwing litter in a public place is an offence that can be subjected to an on-the-spot fine of €150 or a maximum fine of €3,000 if you are convicted of a litter offence in the District court.”
Why do we need such acts? Can’t we people consciously be aware that this is our home and we need to take care of it? Why do need to be bound by such laws to do something that is so obvious? Are we so naive to the fact that the earth is our home and it should be preserved?
We need to take steps towards a cleaner and healthier environment. It can be done by a group of people to create awareness or by a single person it doesn’t matter unless the motive is clear. The environment must be kept clean for a healthier and secure living ahead. It is not possible to clean the entire world in a single day but we need to take the initiative, we need to start something to at least roll the ball.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
– Margaret Mead
