Food, food, food…….all forms of living beings need food but what’s the necessity of it? The answer most of us know is to satisfy appetite and to meet physiological needs for growth, to maintain all body processes, and to supply energy to maintain body temperature and activity. Yes, every part of our body uses energy from food. Brain uses energy to think, heart uses energy to beat, muscles use energy to move etc. Growing also requires food. Eating the right kinds of foods can help keep us healthy. But the only thing that differs is some take it as a part of their monotonous routine while others go for their madness being a foodie especially youngsters. Most importantly eating certain foods can help prevent some diseases.
What is your favorite food? Some people love pizza. Some people love ice cream. Not many would say Maggi is their favorite food. But you can’t eat only pizza and ice cream all the time. You also need fruits, vegetables, and other kinds of foods. Water is also very important for your body. Because foods differ markedly in the amount of the nutrients they contain, they are classified on the basis of their composition and the sources from which they are derived. You need all kinds of foods to keep your body strong and healthy. Nutritionists say you should eat grains, such as bread, pasta, and cereal. You should eat eggs, milk, cheese, and other dairy products. You should eat meat, fish, beans, or tofu (bean curd). They also say to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day. But you should not eat too many foods with lots of fats or sugars. You need to eat some of each of these different kinds of foods to get nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water). Be cautious to stay away from junk foods such as candy, potato chips, and soda.
Many processed foods not only contain high levels of added simple sugars, they also tend to be high in fat and lacking in the vitamins and minerals found naturally in complex carbohydrates. Such processed foods are referred to as junk foods and say that they provide only empty calories, meaning they are loaded with calories from sugars and fats but lack the essential nutrients that our bodies need.
It is rightly said water is the “precious liquid” and a “universal solvent”. Water makes up most of the blood and helps carry oxygen and food to the cells in the body. Water helps our body get rid of wastes through urine and sweat. Water does many other things inside the body. You could live only eight to ten days without water but you could live for weeks without food. You need at least 1- 2 liters of water each day to replace the water that body uses up. But need not to worry – drinks such as milk or juice contain mostly water. Many foods, especially juicy fruits, contain water as well.
When the body is not given enough of any one of the essential nutrients over a period of time, it becomes weak and less able to fight infection. The brain may become sluggish and react slowly. The body taps its stored fat for energy, and muscle is broken down to use for energy. Eventually the body withers away, the heart ceases to pump properly, and death occurs—the most extreme result of a dietary condition known as deficiency-related malnutrition. Deficiency diseases result from inadequate intake of the major nutrients. These deficiencies can result from eating foods that lack critical vitamins and minerals, from a lack of variety of foods, or from simply not having enough food.
Coming to youngsters, they can’t stay away from food. From burgers, sandwich to pizza, desserts, and ice-creams everything they have on their finger-tips. And many restaurants have opened up worldwide offering multi-varied cuisines. That’s the reason behind for most of the software companies owning a food-court inside their campus itself. Even in malls you can see the crowd rushing into food-court. Now, being in internet era along with advancement in technologies, many have started to offer home delivery which has made the people even more immobile. Just with a single call (sometimes it’s a miss call), the order reaches your doorstep the next minute. Then how your energy will be consumed? When you take in the same number of calories that you burn every day, your weight stays the same. If you take in more calories than you burn, you gain weight. If you take in fewer calories than you burn, you lose weight. Intake of too much of calories is not a better sign. Beware of chocolates too. It may be an easy way of pleasing someone by giving away chocolates but later they end up having infections in tooth, stomach etc. Even a bit of dark chocolate is good for heart but the calorie content in it is too high. However, regular exercise helps to burn calories.
Being modern, our zeal lies in trying out different things and so in the case of food too. Tasting Italian, Chinese, Spanish or trying new ice-cream/cake flavors or putting extra toppings doesn’t going to make a big deal but the thing to be taken care of is the calorie intake.
Just as an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a healthy and balanced diet can keep you away from the disorders forever. Eat satisfactorily, get completely recharged and stay happily!!
