Florida Dad Loses Over 350 Lbs in 2 Years

At his heaviest, Zach Moore, a 36-year-old from Florida, weighed 500 pounds. As an excessive eater with a 70-inch waist and a BMI of 60, he thought he’d literally eat himself to death — he even recorded a “goodbye” video for his son, reports Daily Mail.

But Moore set out to overhaul his unhealthy lifestyle. He cut out high-fat and sugary foods from his diet, quit smoking and walked 10,000 steps a day. In 2014 he underwent gastric bypass surgery and in about 2 years’ time, lost an incredible 350+ pounds.

“I was having issues walking, breathing and getting around every day…” he told Daily Mail. “I truly felt like my life was coming to an end.”

Even after this amazing transformation, due to such extreme weight-loss, Moore was left with 28 pounds of excess infected skin and fat. This required a handful of surgeries to correct (he says he went under the knife 10 times) including a breast reduction, muscle repair and an extreme tummy tuck known as fleur de lis. The intensive skin removal, featured on the daytime talk show The Doctors, called for approximately 2,400 stitches.

After his most recent operation — a belly-button revision — and thanks to a consistent regimen of active, healthy living, Moore looks and feels like a whole new person.

He says there are a lot of “simple everyday things” he’s able to do now that he couldn’t before his weight-loss journey began “like driving a car, sitting comfortably in an airplane seat, walking through the market without stopping to catch my breath, going on field trips with my son’s class and making plans with friends and not canceling on them.”

Most importantly, current-day Moore can keep up with his 8-year-old son. “The thought of not being around kicked me into gear,” he said. “I didn’t want my son growing up with a tombstone for a father and it pushed me to keep fighting during the hard moments.”

Moore told GoodHousekeeping.com that his son is a high functioning autistic child. “[And] the thought of that — of putting my wife, my family, him through life without me — that was not fair,” he said. “That’s not how my mom and dad raised me. My parents raised me with strong family values: work through the bad times together, and we all become strong as one family. I’m able to lead by example now and set examples for him to follow in my foot steps, like father, like son.”

Moore’s next goal is to get surgery to remove excess skin from his thighs. He calls this “Phase 2” and is raising money on a You Care page.

His personal mission? To “give hope to the millions of overweight, obese people around the world that are dreaming of a better, happier, healthier quality lifestyle” because, he writes on his fundraising page, “you are worth it too.”
