How to have a great sense of humor?

Having a sense of humor is a great way to not only feel good but also stay healthy. Sense of humor is not just the ability to make people laugh, it is also the ability to laugh in the face of adversity. It makes our lives easier and healthier. People who have a great sense of humor are fun to be around and have a good social circle. This one trait can make our lives much easier and happier. Some people are born with a great sense of humor. Though, those who don’t possess a sense of humor cane easily develop. Here are a few tips for you to have a great sense of humor-

Begin with a smile

A smile on your face makes your brain release endorphins and serotonin. Even if the smile is fake, the brain perceives it to be real. So when you find yourself in a stressful circumstance, smiling is the best way to melt the stress. By smiling more often, you’ll develop a relaxed and easy state of mind, which is a must for developing a sense of humor.

See yourself as an observer

When you find yourself in a stressful situation, try to detach yourself from yourself and view the situation as a second person. Imagine you being a part of a funny sitcom. It sounds weird but works effectively. Just imagine yourself as the Alan Harper of 2 and a half men (or choose any other character) who’s facing a tough time. This is a fun exercise.

Have a humorous friend

As mentioned before- ’emotions are contagious’. When you stay around people who are happy and funny, you’d automatically develop a mindset which is happy and funny. You’d develop a great sense of humor in no time. Share your anger and frustrations with your friend and try to find humor. This is one of the best ways to melt the stress.

Learn to laugh at yourself

Yes, it is a very important aspect of being humorous. When a friend pokes fun at you, you should be able to laugh at yourself instead of being offended. Many people relate this trait to success in relationships as well. When you are able to laugh at yourself, it shows that you don’t take yourself too seriously.

Watch Funny shows

One reason behind the popularity of these shows is that they depict the universal life problems in a funny manner. Most us can relate to these problems and thus find these shows interesting. Closely observing these shows can increase your sense of humor. Spend some time everyday watching a funny show such as 2 and a half men or How I met your mother. These shows will lighten you up and will help you develop a sense of humor.

Humorous Books

Humorous writers explain tragic and upsetting event in such humorous way that they don’t seem tragic anymore. Read humorous essays of  Dave Barry or David Sedaris. Find P.G. Wodehouse books. Wodehouse’s collection is something every person who want to develop a sense of humor must have. Read ‘Catch 22’, it is a hilarious novel. Reading these books will give a relaxed state of mind and lead you towards a great sense of humor.

Visit Humorous websites

If you’re too lazy to read a book or watch a show, then browsing through funny websites is a great way have a chuckle.  David Letterman’s archives of Top 10 Lists is a great place to begin. Also, you can visit About.com’s political satire page. There are tons on websites and blogs on the web that can lighten you up. So, visit them instead scrolling down your Facebook page.

Laughter clubs

Laughter yoga is the surging trend today. It’s a great way to melt the stress and feel light and humorous. Laughter Yoga involves childish activities that we’re supposed to laugh on. The basic purpose of it is to let the inner child come out. Find a laughter club near you, this one step is all you need to develop a sense of humor.

Feel Relaxed and happy

The last and the most important tip, just feel good. When you’re in a good mood, humor automatically comes out. Have a great lifestyle, have fun with your friends, watch good movies, do all the things that make you feel good. When you find yourself in a tough situation, try to find some humor in it and just laugh it off. Cheers!

I’ll end it with a great quote from D.H. Lawrence, – “It is quite true, as some poets said, that the God who created man must have had a sinister sense of humor, creating him a reasonable being, yet forcing him to take this ridiculous posture, and driving him with blind craving for this ridiculous performance.”
