How to develop a Will of Iron

It’s a known fact- Will Power is an essential ingredient for us to move ahead. Will Power is what distinguishes the victim from the master. Will Power is what keeps us going in challenging times. It is the key attribute found in all the game-changers.  For us to attain success in our respective fields, it’s a must have trait. Some people naturally have an enormous level of Will Power (due to early influences, family background). Sadly, many people lack in it (due to wrong thinking patterns, bad influences). But, a Will of Iron can easily be developed in anyone by indulging in the following techniques-

1. The 5 A.M. Club (as prescribed by Robin Sharma)

This particular habit is a ‘game changer’. Everyday wake up at 5 AM and take out a ‘holy hour’ for your mental and spiritual development. Read a good book, exercise, meditate or practice your art. Do something which will lay down a strong foundation of your day. Early morning is the best time to nourish our souls and develop ourselves. And if you want a prescribed early morning ritual, then you can follow Robin Sharma’s morning routine-  First 20 minutes: Exercising (running, cycling or skipping), next 20 minutes: reading or learning ( you can read a positive book or listen to inspirational podcasts), next 20 minutes: writing in a journal (record your goals, plans, and thoughts in a journal). This habit will take some time to install if you’re accustomed to waking up late. But, try to be sleep early and it won’t be that difficult. In fact, this could turn out to be the most beautiful habit you’d ever imbibe. And remember what Elbert Hubbard said, ” Be pleasant until 10 o’clock in the morning and the rest of the day will take care of itself”. Powerful idea.

Yes, this one is a very important. When we walk towards our limits, our limits expand. If waking up early makes you feel uncomfortable, do it. If you don’t like making your bed, do it. It’s scientifically proven- when we indulge in hard things, our comfort zone expands. And when our comfort zone expands, our will power expands. Remember, “The seduction of safety is more dangerous than the perception of uncertainty”. Your fears are liars and your limits are thieves. We all have that one vision that can keeps us awake in the night and make us wake up early. But, most us divert from the journey after facing a few initial obstacles. And fighting these very obstacles makes our will power go leaps and bound. Muhammad Ali once said, “I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'” So, push your limits and walk towards your dream!

3. Set goals and DO them!

Goals energies our days and keep us on the move. To enhance will power, we must be focused on setting important goals in life. And don’t just set goals, DO goals. Write down a list of your daily, weekly, fortnight, monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals. Review your goals regularly, preferably during the early morning ‘holy hour’. Only a few things in life feel as good as accomplishing a big goal. And remember to not back down after the initial resistance you face. As you continue to persist, the resistance fades away. As we complete our goals, a will of iron will emanate within us. So, set big goals and take action to complete them. And keep in mind, “When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.”

4. Transform your Fitness

As it’s said, “When you transform your fitness, you transform your brain and your life”. Many researches have proved it- exercising releases many positive neurotransmitters such as serotonin, endorphins, and norepinephrine. These positive chemicals in turn makes us feel energized and active. Fit people are more productive and active than people who don’t exercise. So indulge in a regular fitness regime, be it yoga, gym or even a 20 minute jog! A fit mind and body will make your goals easy and increase your will power. Don’t find time for exercise, make time for it! And keep in mind what John Kennedy said, “Physical Fitness in not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.”

5. Celebrate little wins

Yes, many small wins soon transform into big ones. So it’s always a good choice to reward yourself after achieving small wins. Life is short and it’s not supposed to be taken too seriously. We need to have some fun and relax when needed. So spare some time off and relax for a while!
