3 Simple Reasons Why You Should Not Be A Homophobe

Well, let us just get our basic facts correct first. The time when I am typing this on my laptop, the time when this is being published, the time when you are reading it and the time when you might be thinking about it, all such time periods fall into the broad category of Twenty First Century- 21st Century. If that is the case, then I don’t think that we have to be a regressive society and simply scorn at something just because it is not directly related to us.

Keeping in mind the practicality of the thought that society develops as time progresses, we ought to believe that the present conditions would be or rather should be better than the society of the yesteryears. However, let us get a reality check done for ourselves. Have a look around yourself, observe the people around and just read the daily newspaper. That should be enough to grasp the social ethos. We, the youngsters, are the minute cells that would develop and multiply to form the entire body of the society in future. It is in us that the future lies. We all aim for equality and justice.

However, there are times when we do not abide by this simple statement and discriminate a particular section of people due their orientation or preference. The sad state of our society is that even today, people are homophobes, that is, they have an irrational fear of different people as a concept and the entire community. If you are one, I would like to try my best and provide you a perspective that might change your thoughts and if you are not a homophobe, then maybe, you could pass on this piece to someone who is.

If you are one, I would like to try my best and provide you a perspective that might change your thoughts and if you are not a homophobe, then maybe, you could pass on this piece to someone who is.
Let us have a look at some of the reasons why you should not be a homophobe:

1. They are people!

homophobia

Whenever some of us are faced with a situation where we should interact with a homosexual person, we become like Spartan warriors and draw our invisible swords and shields and consider them as the enemy clan. There are instances when people blatantly scan a homosexual person from head to toe as if in the search of finding some new organ. Just because a person has a different way of dealing with a particular thing in life, that does not grant you the permission of making that person feel humiliated and insulted.

We all are civilised enough to respect the other person’s dignity and privacy and not ogle at them as if they were from some alien planet. Homosexuals or rather the queer community altogether are just like us. They are human beings. There, I said it. It is as simple as that. A human has no right whatsoever to discriminate against a fellow human. And why does anyone have to be afraid of a member or a group of members of the same species as themselves? The next time you feel hesitant or uncomfortable around a person belonging to the queer community, try rationalising your views. You know you are not that gullible.

2. A homophobe is a kind of torturer.

TORTURE

Imagine a situation in which wherever you go, whatever you do, people just do not seem to accept you the way you are and you are constantly made to feel as if something is wrong within you. Now extend the duration of that situation to a lifetime, how would you feel then? The answer is a no brainer. Such a scenario carries with itself the germs of depression and mental torture which manifest into an explosion sometimes violently and sometimes, silently.

The intention here is not to portray the members of the LGBTQ community as a group of people with a very sorry state and surrounded with grief, the intention here is to show what can be and what are, in some cases, the reality of a certain number of people and that too, for nothing. Hating a person for his/her (for the lack of availability of a separate pronoun for the genders that are beyond this binary) sexual orientation or formation is as absurd as hating a person for having blonde hair. There is no logic behind this. A moment of bullying that you considered to be so trivial that you would not even remember after two days, could scar a person for life and take away their self-confidence and lead to a personality disorder. By being a homophobe, you are capable of implicating torture onto others and you definitely do not want to one such person.

3. It stunts your personal growth

stunts your growth

It is said time and again that human beings are selfish creatures. They always keep their interests over others’. Maybe, they even should do that most of the times as Darwin said, only the fittest can survive. Keeping that in mind, let us look at the disease of homophobia in a totally self-centred manner. We all know that a flowing stream is always more beautiful, more powerful and more inspiring than a stagnant pool. If you throw a pebble into a river, it would not make much difference to it and would itself sink into its depths.

However, if you throw the same pebble into a stagnant pool, it would create ripples on its surface that would carry on for quite some time. It is obvious that one should be like the river and sway with time and thoughts. If you do not change your thoughts that hold no logic then you are bound to get converted into a stinking cesspool that would just attract germs and insects. Doing away with homophobia means that you are accepting that homophobia is a phobia and it is inhibiting your mental and social growth. It makes you as socially awkward as it makes the homosexuals, at times. so, just accept the fact that homosexuality is a phenomenon that just happens, just like star twinkle. There is no need to attach unnecessary baggage of moral policing to it just because the unknown and unfamiliar makes you uncomfortable. Try getting rid of homophobia and you are sure to emerge a stronger and better person.
