15 odd ways to make use of your lemons



Lemons are one of the most useful things nature has to offer. Some of its uses are very common and known to most people. They have amazing benifits to the human body. Lemon water can prep up your mood and relieve you from depression and stress. It purges the blood and detox the body and aids digestion. Lemon water is helpful for chills and fevers. It can help control high blood pressure, has anti ageing properties and even helps lighten dark spots. Lemon water can reduce phlegm, and can help you breathe properly and so is greatly useful for people with respiratory problems. It is good for stomach health and so on.

Most of these you must have known already. But did you know that lemons can be used to deodorize garbage cans or to keep away stray cats or that it can get rid of weeds. Here are 15 odd ways to make use of your lemons-

1)      Keep food green and lively

Lemon juice is the key to keep food green and last longer. It can even make soggy lettuce crisp. Add the juice of half a lemon to a bowl of cold water and put the soggy lettuce in the mixture and refrigerate. The leaves will become crisp again.

2)      To get fluffy, sticky-free rice


Lemon juice can be used to prevent rice sticking. Add a teaspoon of lemon juice to the pot while the water’s boiling. Stir with a fork before serving.

3)   Deodorize Your bathroom or garbage can-

Toss lemon peels at the base of your trash can to deodorize them. Repeat when needed. The same method can be used in the bathroom.

  4)     Get rid of stains on clothes and floors-

Scrub the stained area on your clothes with a mixture of lemon juice and water. Make a paste of lemon juice and salt and rub it on the affected area, then dry the clothes in sunlight. Repeat the process until the stain is gone. Similarly get rid of tough stains on floor by using some table salt and a half lemon and rub it vigorously on the stain. Rinse well.

5)      Disinfect cuts-

Stop bleeding and disinfect minor cuts and scratches by pouring a few drops of lemon juice directly on the cut. You can also apply the juice with a cotton ball.

6)     Refresh the fridge


Lemon water can get rid of bad smells. Dab lemon juice on a cotton ball or sponge and leave it in the fridge for several hours.

7)   Oral Health-

Lemon water has antibacterial property and can fight throat infections. Use a mixture of lime and water to gargle. Lemon juice is also effective on bleeding gums and reduces toothaches.

8)            Get rid of weeds-

Lemon water can be used to get rid of weeds. Spray the juice on the unwanted plants till they’re well-coated and the weeds will shrivel up in a couple of days.

9)            Ward off insects –

Insects like roaches and fleas don’t like the acidic smell of lemon and will steer clear of them. Mop the floor with a mixture of lemon juice and water or spray the desired areas with the mixture. You can also sprinkle lemon peel around the doorways.

Like insects, felines also hate the citrusy scents of lemons. Use lemons to keep away your cat off the furnitures etc. Grind some lemon peels and toss them on the ground of your house or garden to keep stray cats away.

The acids in lemon juice can dissolve warts. Apply a dab of lemon juice directly to the wart using a cotton swab. Repeat until the warts dissolve completely. Just apply lemon juice directly to the affected area to soothe itching and alleviate rash.

15)         Clean and Whiten Nail


Lemon juice can work wonders on nails. Use a mixture of lemon juice and warm water to soak your fingertips in the mixture for five minutes. You can also rub some lemon peel or lemon slice directly on the nail to get shiny and clean nails.
